Nutrition wasn’t always a passion of mine. My favorite cereal growing up was Lucky Charms, and I considered baking a potato in the microwave covered in cheese to be a well-balanced, nutritious meal. I will even admit to being one of those people who made fun of “gluten-free”; rolling my eyes when I’d hear it in a restaurant or store. I played hard and didn’t think twice about the food I put into my body...
...In 2012 my life shifted significantly. I was living on the coast, working on a boat as a marine educator, and surfing in my spare time. A surfing accident, which landed me in the hospital from a severe concussion, was the “straw that broke the camels back” to my body saying it had had enough. During that year, my health deteriorated fast, and I was diagnosed with two autoimmune diseases: Celiac and Primary Adrenal Failure. I was sick and spent most of my days in bed or on the couch; I was unable to work, and my life and carefree self was gone.
One of my first (of many) doctors suggested I go on the elimination diet to rule out any other foods that could be causing my body extra stress and inflammation. Elimination diet? I already can’t have gluten! What am I going to eat?! I had no one to help me; except my amazing mother who in fact was diagnosed a few years earlier with gluten intolerance (Coincidence?! I think not!).
Fast forward to today, and I can tell you it was a long and hard journey. Little by little I learned more about what foods caused inflammation and what foods healed the system; I took out/added more to my diet and got on the right supplements to slowly heal my body. After realizing how important and necessary whole foods and self-care are to a properly functioning system, and a few solid years of putting that into place, I went from not being able to do anything without putting too much stress on my body to backpacking and surfing again.
I then realized my calling was in the nutrition field. How could I not use this valuable information I had learned to help others do the same? I became certified as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner through the Nutritional Therapy Association, and have since gone on to take additional courses to further my knowledge on gut health, food sensitivities, and adrenal support. This story is why I am here now, to help you. I went through this so that someday I could help you with your health journey.
In my spare time, you will find me filling my cup with self-care, something that took me years to realize I needed more of. I am blessed to live in the beautiful state of Oregon so enjoy the multitude of activities this state offers: gardening, hiking, camping, surfing, and enjoying the lake I live nearby. I am married to an incredibly supportive man, and we currently have two dogs that we like to take on our adventures.
